GLORIA CORDERO APPOINTED TO THE METROPOLITAN WATER BOARD, REPRESENTING CITY OF LONG BEACH
Long Beach, CA – Gloria Cordero was appointed as the City of Long Beach Director to the Metropolitan Water Board of Southern California by Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia, on Tuesday, August 2. She will continue to serve concurrently on the Long Beach Board of Water Commissioners, where she has been serving since her appointment in January 2015.
Established by the state, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is a cooperative of 26 cities and water agencies serving nearly 19 million people in six Southern California counties. MWD imports water from the Colorado River and Northern California to supplement local supplies, and helps its member agencies develop increased water conservation, recycling, storage and other resource-management programs. The City of Long Beach is one of the thirteen original cities, having joined the premier water agency in 1931.
“I am confident that in her additional role, Director Cordero will continue to exemplify the leadership and innovation that we in Long Beach know her for and that we, as a City, pride ourselves upon,” said Mayor Garcia. “Our relationship with MWD is an important one for the quality of life we enjoy in the City and we are fortunate to have excellent Directors fill that role.”
“It is an honor to have been appointed by Mayor Garcia for this distinction,” said Cordero, “Following the exceptional leadership of former Director Suja Lowenthal leaves big shoes to fill.”
Director Cordero received her Master of Arts from the University of Southern California in Public Administration and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from California State University at Long Beach. As a principal in Cordero & Associates, her varied background in public affairs and her knowledge of creating an advocacy base for local utilities and public agencies and her ability to work within local communities and with community and business organizations will be appreciated both by the City and by MWD.
Cordero has a long history of service to the City of Long Beach. In 2006, Cordero was appointed Deputy Director of Community Affairs by then newly-elected Mayor Bob Foster to further his vision specifically in the areas of education, workforce development, nonprofits and business, and community outreach. She also served as the Government Affairs Director for Long Beach City College, where she was responsible for local, state and federal advocacy until 2002. Cordero also worked for nearly two decades with Southern California Edison as a Regional Manager for Public Affairs. She first started with SCE as an Educational Representative where she developed and implemented energy efficiency and safety programs for school districts in Los Angeles, South Bay and Long Beach.
Cordero lives in Long Beach with her husband, The Honorable Mario Cordero, who currently serves as the Chair of the Federal Maritime Commission as an appointee of President Barack Obama. Their children and grandchildren also live in Long Beach: Celine Cordero, an attorney, and Mario Andres Cordero and his wife Ricki, both educators, and three wonderful grandsons.
